14. The Grocery Store

The air conditioning felt good blowing down on his skin as he crossed the threshold into the grocery store. He hadn’t checked what the temperature was supposed to be, but if he had to bet, he would say it was approaching eighty-five Fahrenheit – a hot day for Montana spring. A sheen of sweat covered his arms below the rolled-up sleeves of his button-up shirt. He pushed his hat back with one hand and wiped at the beaded sweat there as he grabbed a small basket for his purchases.

Even though the temperature had dropped below freezing overnight twice this week, it was a going to be a hot spring day. Welcome to Montana, where the weather will change fourteen times within an hour. One time, Cole had even seen lightning in the middle of a snow storm. The unpredictability of it all was one of the best things about this part of the country, and one of the scariest as far as all the tourists were concerned. Heaven forbid they book a trip and get rained on the entire time. As if anyone here could tame the wild country. Please.

He also loved that he lived so far out of town. Being away from the hustle and bustle of the little tourist town was much better than trying to live in it every day. Even more so when those tourists took over, year after year – from Memorial Day to Labor Day, like clockwork. But today he was in town for the second day in a row. Which never happened. He should have stopped to get groceries when he had been in town to visit the bar the day before. Unfortunately, it was just another example of how Claire had made him lose his mind.

Cole sighed as he wandered over to the pasta aisle. He hadn’t seen his guest since their incident the day before. She wasn’t out throwing the ball for Buck this morning. Nor had she come out to take their customary afternoon ride. He knew she was alive though. He could smell the coffee brewing when he walked past the guest cabin.

He was almost okay with not seeing her. He wasn’t quite sure what he was going to say to her yet. He didn’t know how to express his feelings to her. It wasn’t like he loved her, but he was very, very attracted to her. That, at least, he could admit to himself.

Cole picked up a couple of boxes of spaghetti noodles and tossed them into his basket. The sauce was next. Aisle six, maybe? He stood there, glancing over all the different flavors. Why did there have to be so many? His stomach rumbled. Maybe he should have eaten something back at the ranch before this little excursion. Wasn’t there an old adage about that? Never shop when you are hungry? Donuts sounded pretty good. Maybe he would just get some of those. His stomach grumbled in agreement.

“The garlic and mushroom is the best one.
